When it comes to heating your homes, nothing beats the warmth and ambience of a wood burning stove. Whether you live in a new build, or a traditional country house there really is a stove for every home.  Recently however, there has been a lot of negative press regarding the future of wood burning stoves.

We have put together, this useful guide to answer any questions you may have:

Are wood burning stoves being banned?:

No! Wood burning stoves are not being banned, this is a common misconception that many people have. The regulations have been recently changed. In 2019, DEFRA ( Department for Environment food and rural Affairs) published its Clean Air Strategy ; “The Clean Air Strategy recognises that all wood burning is not the same and that reductions in particulate emissions (PM) can be achieved through the installation Eco design stoves burning Ready to Burn logs that have a moisture content below 20%” Stove Industry Alliance.

As long as, the stove  is regularly maintained and  you are burning the right fuel, you should be good to go

What does Eco Design Ready mean?

“Eco design ready” means that a product has been tested and verified to meet the stricter efficiency and emissions standards set out by the Ecodesign Regulation.

The Ecodesign Regulation came into force in the UK on January 1, 2022, and applies to all stoves manufactured and placed on the market after that date. The regulation includes the following requirements: Reduced particle emissions, Lower carbon monoxide, and improved efficiency through better standards in fuel.

What type of fuel should I burn?:

Choosing the right fuel to burn is essential, for a clean and efficient burn. In fact, burning poor quality or damp fuel can cause the stove glass to blacken  We always recommend using kiln dried logs, the logs should have a moisture content of less than 20% and should be kept in a dry place. Alternatively, if you are opting for a ‘multi-fuel’ model there is also the option to burn smokeless coal.

How much does a wood burning stove cost?:

Most stoves cost between £600 – £1,500 – there are many factors that will affect this such as the size, quality and design of the stove. Installing a wood burning stove usually starts from around £1,400. This will include your flue liner, register plate and all the parts you will need to have the stove up and running.  Luckily at Rigby’s we offer a free site survey and professional wood burning stove installation. All of our engineers are HETAS registered ensuring that your stove is safely installed.

Do I need a chimney?:

No! It is possible to have a wood burning stove installed even if you do not have a chimney. Although a lot more work is required, you will need to factor in the higher installation costs. An average twin wall flue installation,  with a wood burning stove is usually between £5000 – £6000. At Rigby’s our engineers are able to install a wood burning stove using a twin wall flue system.

A twin wall flue system is installed where a masonry chimney breast does not exist, the flue system is designed to exit through the roof, or external wall to draw fumes away from the stove, safely outside.  This is effectively a way of installing a chimney stack.

What are different styles of stoves available?:

Wood burning stoves come in a variety of designs catering to different needs, aesthetics and heating capacities, the majority are freestanding: Freestanding stoves are known for their  timeless appeal. These stoves stand independently allowing them to be installed in various locations in a room. These stoves come in various designs, from sleek modern models to more traditional styles.
